This was a custom tape made for me by Dante Carfagna in 1999. I cant say enough about this tape.. Dante may be the biggest influence on the funk scene since people like Keb Darge , Ian Wright, Snowboy, John Anderson, etc.. I used to play this very tape on digging trips with Egon as we drove through the south in early 2000 a million times on digging trips. It certainly inspired many of Egon's early Stones Throw comps, Jazzman Gerald comps and even my own taste in soul music from that point, forward. Moving away from chicken scratch guitar and funky drum breaks for sample fodder to a more refined vocal and empowered vocal message based type of funk that focused on the song as a composition. This had a huge impact on how I would filter my taste for soul music in years to come. There are many first time discoveries on this tape like L.A. Carnival, New Establishments Of Soul and East Of Underground just to name a few. This was also the first time "Milk The Basic" was dug up which made its way to "Product Placement" By DJ Shadow and Myself. Trasnport yourself to a time when these were all new discoveries for us as a digging community. This tape is ground zero for that time. There should definitely be a documentary on Dante. Don't get me started on how he influenced my taste in psych folk... Enjoy this time capsule listen with all the tape problems included in all its glory. No restoration, just as is!
