1989 was quite a year for Hip Hop sample based production. It brought us 3 Feet High and Rising By De La Soul, Soul II Soul and Paul's Boutique. All of which explored the idea of combining samples from different records that were in key with one another and furthermore using octave key changes for arrangement. Dust Brothers were masters at that with key examples being Egg Man, Sounds Of Science and Car Thief. This is one long mix tape style track of the entire album the way it was meant to be experienced... as one long mix. The Dust Brothers were mega mix artists utilizing that talent for an entire rap album. Ad Rock was inspired by this when hearing Matt Dyke (RIP) play tracks from, what would be their sophmore album, at a party in LA circa 1988. The rest is history!
