about

Here is something for the hardest of hard core fans of hip hop history. I'm not sure one could call this a demo tape but rather a collection of early recordings from a couple of folks that would become one of Hip Hop's most influential groups of all time. I've had this tape since 1988. I wont go into detail but this found its way to me through very odd circumstances. I also got the "It Takes A Nation" Album on this tape which hadn't officially been released yet so I was the coolest kid in school that spring..
So there's a story about 80's College Radio Hip Hop that continues to be swept under the rug. While Giants like Kiss FM and WBLS were dominating the NYC airwaves with shows by Red Alert and Mr Magic, smaller stations such as WHBI and WBAU were doing their own specialty mix shows, only with much smaller bandwidth. WBAU was the radio station for Adelphi University which was about 20 miles east of Manhattan and was home of Spectrum City (Chuck D, MC Flavor, DJ Wizard K Jee aka Keith Shocklee). At the same time this station also hosted The Operating Room by a couple of guys known as The Concept which later became Original Concept (Dr Dre And T Money) who then met their worldwide fame hosting the weekday broadcasts of Yo! MTV Raps.
Along with Spectrum City's completely outsider psychedelic rap shows on the air in the mid 80s they also made songs. Spectrum City released one single n 1984 called "Lies"/"Check Out The Radio". What we have here are some unreleased recordings from just after that release and during their tenure at the WBAU. One of these songs would become the debut single for the album under their new group name... Public Enemy! These demos were all made in 1985 except for the last song which I believe is 1987 because it uses a sample from PE's "Yo! Bum Rush The Show" album and the name Flavor Flav is all over it.
WARNING: Its Lo Fi but I did what I could in the mastering.
ALSO WARNING: Flavor Flav sings a love ballad!
